Are you talking to the Divine or your Ego

Have you ever wondered if your divine download was really your higher self, or your ego in sacred disguise?
If you’ve been on social media for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that spirituality hasn’t evolved into a place of growth. Rather, it has devolved into aesthetic altars with no power behind them, created by individuals seeking clout rather than knowledge. I don’t think this is necessarily true for all practitioners, but when imitation replaces initiation, the spiritual current weakens.
“If you do not tell your energy where to go, it will leak.” — Lilith
Some practitioners are simply echoing what they see. They shell out the names of Gods and Goddesses as if they were Pokémon, placing them into boxes that dictate how others should practice, and speak for them as if they were the sole authority. It’s an easy web to get caught in, but can we break free?
The Balancing Act
Part of this path is a balancing act. As a middle-aged man, I have some life experience and truly incredible encounters with my spiritual court. Speaking from experience, I can share the lessons a God, Goddess, or Spirit has taught me, and how those lessons were delivered and received. This, too, could be considered clout chasing, but the difference lies in intent. That intent is to teach, to progress, and to grow into your power.
Ego or Spirit? How to Tell the Difference
How do you know if it’s your ego responding or a spirit guiding? It’s very simple.
Your ego is agreeable. It says “yes” to everything you do, say, or cast. It tells you that you’re just fine as you are. It enables laziness, sitting back as you become wrapped in the chaos of your own creation. Ego flatters but never challenges. It keeps you comfortable, reactive, and stagnant.
The Divine, on the other hand, will tell you when you are wrong. Spirits will withdraw if they feel disrespected. They challenge you, stretch you, and often make you uncomfortable, all for your progression in both life and spirituality.
“Shut up and listen. Be still and pay attention; the universe whispers when it speaks.” — Agrat
Messages from the Divine often appear through dreams, synchronicities, and symbols. And not everyone experiences the same version of a God or Goddess. Some of my harshest teachers have been Goddesses like Kali and Hekate, while some of my gentlest guides have been Demons such as King Belial and King Paimon.
In the midst of King Belial tearing down my old foundations, he walked beside me with gentle guidance, even as his lessons were harsh. Kali brought abrupt change and demanded that I adapt quickly. I appreciate both styles of teaching and growth.
Breaking Free
So, how can we break free? Start by asking yourself: What lesson might be hidden beneath this impulse?
Breakthroughs come to each practitioner differently, often through the experience of being constantly intertwined with drama and chaos. Many younger practitioners believe their hexes and curses are landing when in truth, they are creating their own downfall. The absence of one’s spiritual court will eventually be felt, and as a young man, I can tell you, seeing your favorite deity withdraw from you is heartbreaking.
Breaking free means reclaiming your personal power. Invocation should be an act of honor and respect, a sacred collaboration with the Divine to complement and empower your own work, not to substitute it.
Closing Reflection
True power isn’t just calling on the Divine to validate you. It’s the ongoing process of progression, connection, and refinement that allows the Divine to speak through you, in sacred action and spiritual evolution.
